Sometimes It Rains, Sometimes It Poors
And sometimes it just doesn’t know what it’s supposed to do. This day has been one of those days. Every two weeks approximately we drive 2.5 hours from Halifax to Digby to visit my parents and my brother and to see Mango and Waffles who are temporarily staying with my parents. This week was our week to go. We left yesterday and got there around 3 in the afternoon.
Not long after we got there my mom mentioned we had mail. One of which was addressed to Edward. Turned out to be a cheque from Manulife for his RSP thingy from Wal-Mart. Since he left Wal-Mart they pay it out in full. So it was a decent amount. Which was not expected, in fact we didn’t know about it at all. Being a cheque though and not direct deposit there is a 5 business day hold.
A few days ago I noticed that our breaks were sounding a bit off and grinding a little. So we thought, great, when we get back to the city we can get some much needed work done on the car. I also needed to work when I got back as we have an car insurance payment due on Tuesday, the cheque will not clear until the following Monday.
So this afternoon we start heading back to Halifax, suddenly the breaks are sounding awful. So we pull off and onto the old road instead of the main highway as it is slower and less chance of hitting a deer should one run out in front of us. After last time we went to my parents I was taking no chances (we actually hit a deer the last time we went! thankfully the damage to the car was minimal and the deer ran off).
At one point we realized that the old road was closed at a certain point due to a bridge being worked on after being washed out in the last storm. So we turn around, we get near a grocery store and Eddie says he needs to pee. So we stop there. And that’s when everything went wrong. Suddenly we had no breaks at all and a constant grinding. We were still an hour from the city and we both needed to be back to work at 11pm.
My parents drove the 1.5 hours to us so my dad could figure out what to do. He drove it around the parking lot a bit and said he was sure we were okay to limp back to the city. As long as we stayed on the old road as much as possible, didn’t try to stop suddenly and then parked the car and not use it other then taking Edward to work, as at this point its impossible for me to work. We made it back to Halifax but now we have no car, an insurance payment that we have no way to make money for (that would get paid out on time) and have to wait over a week for the cheque to clear.
It’s always seems to be one step forward and two steps back. It’s so tiring. Between the good news and bad news. I don’t know whether I am coming or going, as my Nan used to say. Oh and I have not heard back from Halifax Transit. Not sure how the testing went. I feel that I did good on one part and bad on the other. More of the same old. It just seems like everytime something good happens something bad has to follow.
Sorry to hear about your bad day.
Having an emergency fund really comes in handy for situations like this. Last year I woke up to a burst water pipe on my lawn, It was $1000 to fix it. A few months before that the AC unit went out, another thousand for that.
The emergency fund really saved our butts. You can slowly build up one over time, we just deposit a small amount every time we get paid and it builds up over time.
Hopefully the car turns out ok,
Regards
Hi John! Yes, I totally agree! Having an emergency fund would be really beneficial but at the moment we are making just enough to pay for and sometimes not even enough to pay for our bills, so it’s a struggle.
Hopefully this money that we got will be a small start of an emergency fund if we have anything left over after fixing the car!
